The DesIgn
Dalga (wave in Turkish) is a single-seater, low-sitting chair that utilizes discarded fishing nets to create a comfortable sitting experience while keeping the product environmentally responsible. It uses plywood for strength and wooden dowels for rigidity. The product comes flat-packed in cardboard and assembled in 3 steps without the use of fasteners.
Dalga was chosen among the 10 best designs but could not make it into the first three.
DesIgn Process
"The initial inspiration for this project was Turkish culture, in which people usually sit closer to the ground. This "low sitting" setting is proven to have health benefits as well."
"Also our material research revealed that up to 1 million tons of fishing gear is littering the oceans every year, discarded nets and lines make up 46% of the Great Pacific, and thrown away fishing gear makes up 10% of all marine litter. So we decided to upcycle discarded fishing nets to create ropes, which became the sitting surface of the chair."
Mock-ups & Prototypes
Our first mock-up was 1:5 scaled. It was made out of cardboard and paper just to visualize the product in 3D
After the first mock-up we wanted to test for strength. So we 3D printed 2 variations and assambled them using fishing line.
We needed a 1:5 prototype that was made of accurate materials and techniques to be sent to Spain as part of the contest. So after some more refinement, we made the final prototype.
